Today is National Wear Red Day. It’s a day that sets out to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke in women by wearing the color red. Cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of 500,000 American women every year, making it the number one killer. Because of this scary statistic and the fact that women were dismissing it as an older man’s disease, the American Heart Association created Go Red for Women, a nationwide social initiative that aims to inspire and ignite women to take action for better heart health.
Macy’s is the national founding sponsor of Go Red for Women, raising $65 million since the initiative began in 2004. Each year, Macy’s partners with a handful of designers to offer unique pieces in various shades of red during the month of February. A percentage of each sale directly benefits Go Red for Women. Every dollar donated, no matter where it comes from, helps fund lifesaving research and awareness that adds more time to women’s lives. If you’re interested in donating, click here.
As someone who has a family history of heart disease, this cause is incredibly important to me. Awareness and prevention actually save lives. Working in healthcare, I know this for a fact. I hear the stories and I see the numbers. Speaking of facts, here’s a good one: 80% of cardiovascular diseases may be preventable with education and action.
